Achieve top-decile performance within the electric utility industry by 2015, as measured by recordable and severity injury rates. Zero injuries, zero fatalities, zero harm is our ultimate goal. This requires proactive actions to engage employees. |
Recordable: Severity: |
2011 recordable target – 0.97 2011 severity target – 19.94 |

Replace manlifts in power plants by 2013. [Note: We are not "replacing" one for one. Some are being retired without replacement.] |
The manlift replacement program is currently on schedule to be complete by 2013. Manlift replacement projects have been completed at Kammer, Mitchell, Mountaineer, and Rockport plants. |
The manlifts at Amos, Gavin, and Cardinal are scheduled to be completed in 2011. Expect to complete manlift replacements on schedule in 2013. |

Improve contractor safety and health performance. Recordable goals set annually; zero fatalities. |
There were 3 contractor fatalities in 2010. However, we did make our recordable target of 1.80 with a 2010 performance of 1.66. In 2011, the number of business units participating in this performance metric will increase and will include all major O&M contractors doing work for AEP (e.g. construction). |
2011 recordable target – 1.70 |

Reduce public contacts and fatalities associated with people coming into contact with our electrical facilities. This is a very challenging goal since AEP has little control over the public’s behaviors. Reduce copper theft incidents. |
There were 9 fatalities and 37 electrical contacts (4 resulted from copper theft). Three of the fatalities were a result of copper theft. We continue to partner with safety organizations such as National Safety Council, Edison Electric Institute, Energy Education Council, OSHA and others to share our public safety resources such as the Boy Scotts of America, in an effort to better educate the public. In terms of resources we have created, we have developed facts sheets on topics such as "Anatomy of a Transmission System", "What's on an Electric Power Pole", and Anatomy of a Distribution System". We created videos such as "Copper Theft Consequences", "Live Line Dangers", "Live Line Demonstration" and "Copper Theft Consequences'. We also take advantage of social media using sites such as Twitter and Facebook to post educational information concerning public safety. |
Continue on path to reduce public contacts and fatalities. |

Increase employee and spouse/domestic partner participation in AEP’s wellness program. Wellness is essential to safety and a productive, healthy work force. |
Approximately 36 percent of eligible employees and 32 percent of their covered spouses/domestic partners completed all three steps of AEP’s wellness program – a health screening, health assessment questionnaire and a health improvement program. Risk assessments completed between Oct. 2009 and Sept. 2010 showed improvement in nine risk factors, including physical activity, nutrition, depression and blood pressure. |
Continue to increase participation in the wellness program each year and develop new programs or approaches that will engage more employees and their covered spouses/domestic partners. |

Continue to build outreach programs to identify and locate diverse suppliers for procurement opportunities; develop a plan to move AEP to "outstanding" rating in 2012 SBA audit. |
Work ongoing. |
Develop internal educational programs to increase supplier diversity awareness throughout the organization, create a framework for an AEP Supplier Diversity Champions Network and continue to provide the maximum practicable opportunity for diverse suppliers to participate in the AEP procurement process. By developing and promoting innovative programs, AEP will be able to achieve an "outstanding" rating from the Small Business Administration. |
