Goals and Performance - Stakeholder Engagement

Goal

2010 Progress

Future Target

A fully developed stakeholder outreach plan that includes regular stakeholder briefings, updates to key goals and the production of AEP’s annual Corporate Accountability Report.

We held 9 stakeholder meetings in 2010 and posted a mid-year update on key commitments to the web.  We regularly used social media outlets to reach more stakeholders.

Further develop our relationships by meeting with smaller groups to focus on specific issues of concern to our stakeholders, our business, our communities and the environment.

Further develop our integrated reporting process to achieve best practices.

Encourage and support employee community involvement, continue philanthropy and corporate giving including our IBEW/ United Way partnership.

Employees collectively fulfilled more than 57,000 hours of volunteer service, and AEP donated more than $23.6 million through corporate giving and AEP Foundation dollars to approximately 2,700 organizations.

We provided more than $60,000 in Teacher Vision grants to educators in grades pre-K through 12 to support classroom education.

AEP employees contributed more than $2 million to the United Way with AEP donating just over $1 million.

Continue our ongoing commitment to philanthropic and charitable giving to revitalize communities and support important initiatives such as education, which is important to attract and retain the best talent.

Continue to fund Teacher Vision grants and support education initiatives as an area of focus for corporate giving.

Increase awareness and understanding of issues such as the cost and value of electricity, energy efficiency and the effects of AEP’s transformation on communities, customers and shareholders.

Organized internal Energy Sustainability Week to help employees connect sustainability to their jobs, AEP’s business strategy. More than 60 events at 30 work locations in 7 states.

These issues are regularly discussed in stakeholder meetings, presentations and are covered extensively on the web.

All of AEP’s websites contain information on these issues and each company, including the corporate office, engage in social media to communicate these issues.

Continue to increase awareness among all stakeholders and shareholders of the transformation of AEP and the impact to cost of electricity.

Raise employee awareness of AEP’s sustainability initiatives and their link to business strategy.

Provide a culture where employees speak openly about company issues.
Incorporate opportunities for employees to become engaged, learn and network.

In 2010, AEP held its second annual Energy Sustainability Awareness Week to help employees make the connection between their jobs and meeting AEP’s sustainability goals.

AEP’s has 20 internal blogs where employees are encouraged to ask questions and speak freely about numerous topics that affect our business.

Continue efforts to raise awareness among employees and report on progress.

Continue encouraging a culture of transparency and openness.
